The installation has three parts: the flower garden (complete with floating lily pond, several copper flaming flowers and cactus garden and a weeping willow tree), a fire fan 6 chambered flamethrower sequenced by a midi controller, and a kerosene cannon, the flaming lotus senior. Participants will be invited from afar by the sight of white fabric clouds, as they approach nearer, the see that they are approaching an island world vegetated by steel and copper flowers, cactus and trees. They can enter this island domain walking in and amongst a flower garden, shadow light cactus garden, 10 foot flaming lotus flower, they can day dream while gazing into the floating flaming lily pond, overhung by a flaming weeping willow tree. They can write poetry amidst the tranquility of the garden and be excited by grand bursts of flame which may suddenly arise around them. Fire Island The island shore will be suggested by white fabric stretched between rebar? like clouds or wisps of seafoam floating near the shore. At night, the periphery will be lit by sparkling star lights which surround the island. . Paths will welcome vistors in the firey garden guiding them to nerve station of garden installations. Once they have reached an innner garden they can lay there own hands on the controls pulsing the flowers creating small controlled bursts bringing each flower to life the garden a great and magnificant mystical fan of the fire goddesss herself. Where each blade of leaf metamohisis into the finger of hadies, send pillars of fire electronicly controled firing out into a hugh cocauphny and dance. With evey pulse, pop, flare and scream controoled by particapants at buring man. . As the progress throughout garden there are steel park benches inviting them to pause, relax and contemplate the floating world of Burning man watching us the world floats in the heat distorted air of Fire Island. By including benches in our flower garden, we encourage Burning Man participants to come and spend some time reveling in the garden, observing the flowers and fire art. Engulfed within the flames of the flowers?. Fire Island concentrates on the affect of flames in many different formats; propane, compressed kerosene etc. Our flamethrowers are designed to be operated by Burning Man participants. Operators can duel against each other creating a fire show of unheard proportions. Each and every operator is given a flaming lotus girls sticker. We emphasize the abilty of any burningman participant to operate our machines and join our group. The smaller propane belchers will have a control box and large buttons for any person who wishes to ignite them. The larger flamethrowers will be operated in conjunction with a flaming lotus girl to co-ordinate fire safety and machine safety. Ladies can get even more involved by operating various devices, with guidance by on site Lotus girls. The girls brave enough to operate the machines will get a flaming lotus sticker. Everyone who operates the machines becomes a bonafide flaming lotus girl! We plan to operate the flower garden from sunset to 3.00 AM every evening, we will also operate different devices at unscheduled times during the day and night. The larger flamethrowers will be operated on a schedule, running at least twice per night. X 5?, steel, illuminated by flame within, fueled by propane weeping willow tree propane flowing through steel tubing, ignited by? lily pond with fountain 4-5? diameter, shallow, 9? - 12? water-filled, copper lily pads with blossom fountain of water and cascading flames engine block flower bush Blue burning propane/air flames, always ON 2 propane vertical flamethrowers 1 steel 4? X 3? agave, 1? pilot, 10? propane bursts *1 flower (mini-mega-flaming lotus jr) Propane compression chamber, high pressure solenoids release a burst of propane when ever someone presses the button! Flames up to 25 feet. This is the safest and easiest to operate of all our larger flamethrowers. Features compression chamber and high pressure solenoids to release the burst of propane when someone pushes the button *Flaming Lotus Kerosene Cannon The Flaming Lotus Senior is our first flamethrower from Burningman 2000. We compress nitrogen and use solenoids to push kerosene out and upwards, through a pilot light to create a massive explosion. Flames of40 to 60 feet. We have used this this for years for fun many a young lady Seashell Kerosene Squitre Fire fan New fire fan consists of 6 kerosene squirters, activated by a mid-sequencer. Flames range from 50 to 60 feet. 6 kerosense squitrters will be fed by a central kerosene reservoir under pressure and have solenoids controlled by midi sequencer Not flaming copper grass benches ? rods of rebar white fabric seafoam Xmas lights (? feet) Tiki torches Generators Strobe lights Diagrams Island design Fire Safety We divide out safety into two areas: people and machines Safety of operators, participants and our team while operating Fire island. When the tanks are hooked uop, flaming lotus girls and a firesafety team will be available. We will have a safety walk through Test propane harnesses for leaks, test pressure, fire burst perimeters etc? Perimeters Crowd control for big cannons Flaming lotus girl operator and Fire safety person at al times with CO2 fire extinguishers, wet towels Safety of our machines, gas parts, valves, hoses etc Our machines are designed to withstand high pressures and tested before we arrive for burningman. Propane hosing and connectors are a vital part of our equipment. For this year, we have budgeted for purchasing a hose crimper, rather than than the hose clamps we normally use. This and other innovations such as the use of metal plumbing and parts where possible ensures a high standard of safety. All machines will have fire and lighting at night, to allow the operators to see what they are doing. Once the machines are switched off, and we leave the installation, we install strobe lights on each machine to ensure that no one walks into or drives into the machines during times when the generator is not running. We want to make sure that the island is safe for the people who are there and the people who are operating it We want to make sure that we design and construct our machines to the highest safety standards available in the desert and we comply with Nevada?s new propane regulations. Out technical advisor Dave X posseses the highest ingenuity and skill level?posseses great knowledge All os our propane tanks will have OPG relief valves?(pressure relief vavl) Regulators to prevent blowback We want to buy a crimping tools instead of using hose clamps to ensure tight and permanent connections that never leak never loosen. We use as many metal parts as possible (e.g. steel pipe instead of plastic) Set-up and Cleanup Most of our designa nd set up is done before we leave for the desert. Flowers and wiring are all packed down And we assemble onsite will take us a day to assemble and test. Cleanup occurs everyday. We clean the installation, make sure that any trash accidentally left by burningman participants (alcohol, boas, blinking flashing things, water bottles) are removed every day. We aim to create a trash free environment within the island and surrounding areas. At the end, we remove all machines and art, scour surrounding area ground for trash and remove, Schedule and Timeline Budget We need $12,000 to create this installation. Our main costs are parts, fuel and transportation. Many flowers have already been built operated at Burning Man past. We intend to build a new propane vertical flamethrower. Alternate Sponsors????? Fire island will creep out of burning mans floating world like a smoking cauldren delicate flowers lapping the desert shore with delicate flames curling out between each glowing copper petalFarther and deeper each participant will adventure and investigate into the steel and fire horticulture of the island installation. As they progress into the garden the flowers grow ever larger, a stately willow blows in the wind as fire drips from it's spindly bows, through an intricate web of leaves to be released as it floats evaportating into fire before hitting the ground. Onwards they will journey deeper in the garden where the flowers will begin to grow, becoming giants steel and fire monstrasities from times long forgotten. The inner workings of the larger flowers will be layed open splayed across the derest inviteing each participant to test then nerve and fire the lotus creating 20 ft plumes of fire lighting the night for seconds and the harts of 1000's for ever.
